A team of researchers from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) attended and presented academic papers at the world-leading Seventeenth International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2016) which was held at the University of Coimbra in Portugal from 21st to 24th June. During this year’s symposium, the organiser - the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - announced that the upcoming eighteenth symposium will take place at MPI in 2017. Following MPI’s efforts in the past two years and its subsequent successful bid to host this event, it is expected that over 100 renowned researchers and practitioners worldwide will gather at the Institute next year to promote scientific and academic developments in Macao.

The Seventeenth International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2016) was co-hosted by the IEEE, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and the University of Coimbra. The symposium invited researchers and practitioners who are specialised in all aspects of wireless, mobile, and multimedia pervasive communications to meet and share their ideas on the latest developments in their respective areas of expertise. This year’s conference was attended by delegates from over 20 countries with more than a hundred outstanding papers accepted for presentations. Papers presented by MPI included one with the title “Non-integer Bit Estimation for Enhanced {Inter-Picture} Prediction in H.265/HEVC” by Dr. Marcus Im, Vice President and Professor of Computing of MPI, and another paper on “A Portable Wireless Sensor Network System for Real-Time Environmental Monitoring” by Dr. Rita Tse, Director of the School of Public Administration and Associate Professor in Computing. Both papers drew favourable comments from those in attendance. MPI hopes that by hosting the eighteenth symposium in June next year, the event will drive the scientific and academic development of these fields in Macao.

Whilst in Portugal, the MPI delegation had a meeting with Professor Luis Filipe Menezes, Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra and his team of researchers. Professor Menezes expressed his appreciation for MPI’s contribution towards academic exchange between the higher education sectors of Macao and Portugal. Both parties agreed to foster cooperation in academic areas such as teacher and student exchange programmes, research projects and joint conferences, among others. MPI noted that a number of joint research projects in computing technology between the two institutions were now seeing good progress thanks to the immense support from the Macao SAR Government. Moving forward, the Institute will continue to strengthen the linkage between the Institute and the higher education system in Portugal, as well as to enhance the teaching and research in the Portuguese language, technology and other areas of expertise.
